Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Governor Richard Thornburgh (PA) v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists --1986

The AmericanCollege of Ob-Gyns brought this case against Governor Thornburgh stating that Pennsylvanias Abortion Control Act of 1982 violated the Constitution.

The Supreme Court struck down part of this statute that required doctors to use abortion techniques that maximized the chance of fetal survival, even when these techniques increased the risks to the pregnant woman's life or health. The invalidation of this law showed that womens lives should be valued above the potential life of a fetus.
