Cora McRae (pregnant Medicaid
recipient) v. Patricia Harris (U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services) -1980
McRae challenged the Hyde Amendment of 1976, which prohibits the federal Medicaid funding of abortions not necessary to preserve the woman’s life.
The Court upheld the Hyde Amendment.Similar to Maher v. Roe, the justices said that a woman's freedom of choice
did not carry with it "a constitutional entitlement to full financial
resources.”
